The Westport Arts Center galleries are now one of the most important destinations in Connecticut for those interested in contemporary art. The Main Gallery features three to four curated exhibitions each year, centered on current themes or ideas in contemporary art developed by our Director of Visual Arts, Helen Klisser During. During the summer, the Main Gallery is dedicated to its Members Shows, which currently feature a juried SOLOS SHOW and the Members Group Juried Show. The Westport Arts Center also recognizes the abundance of local and global talent through occasional juried exhibitions, and the Studio Gallery, where individual artists can exhibit bodies of work in this wonderfully funky alternative exhibition space. The galleries are also a popular gathering space for art lovers who come to ArtCafe, Brown Bag lunches, film screenings, concerts, literary discussions and other events. Come visit, we're open 7 days a week! |

 CONGRESSIONAL ART COMPETITION 2008
Saturday, 5/3/08 1:00pm
|
An Artistic Discovery 2008 Congressional Arts Competition
“An Artistic Discovery” began in 1982 as an attempt to offset reductions in federal grants for arts programs by giving our creative high school students the chance to have their talents recognized nationwide. Since then, more than 650,000 students have participated in the competition, and the works of thousands of young American artists have been showcased in a passageway to the U. S. Capitol. The winning artwork will hang for one year beside works from other congressional districts in the passageway between the House office buildings and the United States Capitol. The winner will receive round-trip transportation for one to Washington, D.C., compliments of Warren Travel of Westport, for the opening reception. The works of the two runners-up from the Fourth District will be displayed in the local offices of Congressman Shays, one in Bridgeport, the other in Stamford. All participants, their families and teachers, and the public are invited to attend the exhibition and reception at the Westport Arts Center at 1:00 pm on Saturday, May 3, 2008. Winning entries will be announced at the reception.

 EXHIBITION: FOUND
Works by Harvee Riggs Friday, 4/18 - Sunday, 6/8/08
|
Harvee Riggs is a New Haven-based artist who creates mixed media assemblages that juxtapose objects, typically within a box. Opening Reception: Friday, April 18th from 6:30-8:30pm
Artist Statement: My mixed media works are attempts to create intuitively. Juxtaposing objects, typically within a box., I explore and discover what is possible and create the jamais vu, the never before seen. Unrelated objects acquired at different times and from different places, seemingly by chance, can be assembled into new, dynamic apparently inevitable relationships. The medium allows for an unconstrained freedom and produces a mystery of coincidence.
Exhibitions in the Studio Gallery are sponsored in part by Gary Cosgrave. Image credit: Harvee Riggs, "In Memoria."

EXHIBITION: COLOR IN 3D: FOUND, APPLIED & READYMADE
Friday, 4/18 - Sunday, 6/8/08
|
Color in 3D: Found, Applied & Readymade is a vibrant exhibition of contemporary sculpture and installation by some of today's leading artists, curated by Saul Ostrow, chair of visual arts and technologies, head of painting at the Cleveland Institute of Art.
Opening Reception: Friday, April 18 from 6:30 – 8:30 pm
Curator's Talk: Wednesday, April 23 at 7:00pm Public Art in Context Talk: Wednesday, May 14 at 7:00pm
Art in Context Talk: Installation Art: Friday, May 23 at 9:30am
About the exhibition: We’re used to the notion of painters and other two-dimensional artists as “colorists” but when it comes to sculpture, we think mostly about form; color is secondary. The artists in this show use color as an essential organ of their art; color defines the work in a sensational, almost in-your-face way. COLOR IN 3D is an exhibition of contemporary sculpture by artists who use color that is “found” as an inherent aspect of the materials, or “applied” as an additive process, or “readymade” in the manufactured materials used in the work. Some of the work falls into all three categories.
Artists: Diana Cooper, Lucky DeBellevue, James Clark, Lisa Hoke, Russell Maltz, Curtis Mitchell, John Monti, Paul O’Keeffe, Bruce Pearson, Sheila Pepe, Jessica Stockholder, and Guenter A. Werner.
Exhibition highlights:

 EXHIBITION: CAR PARTS
Paintings by Ken Scaglia Friday, 1/11 - Sunday, 2/24/08
|
WAC’s alternative exhibition space features Car Parts, Closely Observed Classic Car Paintings by local artist Ken Scaglia.
Artist Statement: This series of car and truck paintings explores my intrigue with classic automotive form and its styling. I had a keen interest in vintage and classic cars growing up and eventually I owned a couple of my own. I have applied my knowledge of line, form, composition, and color to these perennial symbols of craftsmanship, when an auto’s function was combined with elegance of form. The close observation of the compositions invites the viewer to become an afficionado of the subject, appreciating the detailed rendering of the materials and their polished reflections.
Opening Reception: Friday, January 11th.

 EXHIBITION: ADAM AND EVE
Photographs by Ivo Stoilov Friday, 11/9 - Wednesday, 12/19/07
|
WAC’s alternative exhibition space features the work of Connecticut photographer Ivaylo (Ivo) Stoilov, who says his images of wooden statuettes share the symbolic content of this ancient and compelling story in a way that “leaves us with more questions than answers.”
Artist Statement: Last year I found myself sorting through things brought on my table by chance or habit. Several objects were visually intriguing so I decided to use them in a series of sculptural compositions. Since it was not possible to preserve each group as a physical entity, I started taking photographs. Among the objects were two wooden statuettes of a man and a woman. They were the lone human figures in the collection. Placing a red apple between them was a natural instinct. Later, while examining the photographic record, I felt that number of images shared symbolic content reminiscent of the story of Adam and Eve hence the title of the show. Opening Reception: Friday, November 9th

 EXHIBITION: QUIRKY
Friday, 11/9 - Wednesday, 12/19/07
|
Curated by Michaël Amy, QUIRKY explores idiosyncrasy, the seemingly accidental twists of color, composition and texture that are found in contemporary abstract painting and sculpture. The works in Quirky playfully mock formalist principals of painting, and crosses the boundaries of decorum and “good taste” through use of vibrant colors and unexpected forms. These lively, eccentric works challenge the status quo, defy categories, and rebel against a culture of conformity.
According to curator Michaël Amy, “Quirkiness has rich antecedents in the history of art. From the eccentricities of Bosch and Bruegel, through the invented biomorphs of Miro and the gentle humor of Klee, to the inimitable drips of Pollock, the idiosyncratic has always held great appeal.”
Opening Reception: Friday, November 9 from 6:30–8:30pm
Curator’s Talk: Thursday, November 29 at 7:00pm
Morning Art Talk: QUIRKY in Context with Tom O'Connor Thursday, December 6 from 9:30am-11:00 am

 EXHIBITION: LOOKING INWARD, LOOKING OUT
Photographs by Sandi Haber Fifield Friday, 9/14 - Friday, 10/26/07
|
WAC’s alternative exhibition space features a thought-provoking installation of photographs by artist Sandi Haber Fifield. A resident of Westport whose work is in numerous public collections including MOMA, Fifield’s photographs navigate the territory between thinking and feeling: Like the light that pours through the stillness of a room, outlines emerge, and I frame my vision in the moments presented. When I glance at a young woman looking out of the airplane window, I see more than what is in front of the camera as I think about the panoramas and possibilities her journey will reveal. Through my photographs I aim to arrive at a juncture of balance and hope that reflects life’s joy, uncertainty, beauty, and resilience.
Sandi Haber Fifield received her MFA from Rochester Institute of Technology in 1982 and has since been widely exhibited throughout the United States in both group and solo exhibitions. Her work is in numerous public collections including the High Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Los Angeles County Museum. Her work is also in a variety of publications including Defining Eye: Women photographers in the 20th Century, The Photography of Invention, Fabrications, and Picturing California.
Littlejohn Contemporary in New York City represents Sandi Haber Fifield’s photographs.

 EXHIBITION: STALKING SUBURBIA
Friday, 9/14 - Friday, 10/26/07
|
Curated by Lauren Ryan, STALKING SUBURBIA features work by Gail Peter Border, Andrew Bush, Anthony Goicolea, Todd Hido, Miranda Lichtenstein, Suellen Parker, Julia Peirone, Peter Piller, Bill Owens, Alec Soth and Brian Ulrich.
Through both captured and staged photography, the artists in Stalking Suburbia re-present suburban environments, and the people who inhabit them, as places of fascination, unrealized beauty, destruction and scorn. While artists working in many media, from film to architecture, address the suburban condition, photography has emerged as an especially vital medium contributing to this dialogue.
Opening Reception: Friday, September 14 from 6:30–8:30pm
Curator’s Roundtable with Lauren Ryan & others: Wednesday, September 26 at 7:00pm
Literary Roundtable with Kathy Knapp & Kate Walbert: “Women In Suburbia” Wed., Oct 10 from 7:00 – 9:00 pm
